“To the ends of the earth, would you follow me? There’s a world that was meant for our eyes to see.”
She keeps surprising me. This dog always keeps me on my toes but recently it’s mostly been in a good way. The reaction that I expect her to have to certain situations has changed and it’s refreshing. She’s grown up.
The other day, Callie was napping in a chair as I was working on a paper. Gucci jumped up over the arm of the chair so she too could curl up, but accidentally landed on Callie. They startled each other and Callie growled. For a moment, I saw her old self: very quiet and reactionary as she stared Gucci down. I got scared and immediately crated her with the past incidents weighing heavily in the back my mind. Hours later, to my surprise, I walked in the room to find them curled up together on that same chair.
We were also approached by off leash dogs twice today, both with owners far away. Instead of reacting, Callie distanced herself and even played with one of them. She just might be recovering.
It’s been just over two years since we brought Gucci home and our lives were changed. The road to recovery has been a long journey with a lot of detours, and we’re finally getting to the point where we can reap the benefits. I’ve grown as an owner and Callie’s grown as a dog. I appreciate her willingness to keep moving forward with me.
I used to just live in the moment, focus on our immediate problems to keep progressing one day at a time. I now see a future full of possibilities and adventures; I’m hopeful.
Don’t give up on the tough ones. You’ve got this. Trust the process.
