Mulan - Niki Cato - My last review and then I’ll be done for a bit. This film is so...disappointing. I wanted to like it. I wanted this to be the first live action Disney remake I could go in and enjoy. But no...I can’t. This film is utterly incompetent, both from a technical perspective and an outside perspective. To start, this film is very poorly written and edited. The editing in this film can be extremely jarring and downright confusing. And the writing is worse. Disney has backed themselves into a corner where they have to decide whether to stick extremely close to the source material (Lion King), or change it a lot (this film). And while this film takes from the original, it changed too much and takes out the best parts. The characters are terrible (specifically the side characters as we don’t get to know them, but I’ll get to Mulan soon), the plot is bland and doesn’t do anything interesting with the action, and it lacks the subtle nature of the original. The original Mulan is great because it hides it’s true intentions of empowerment under the subtext of the dialogue and cinematography. This film had the characters say EXACTLY what they’re thinking and it sucks. There’s no subtext or undertones! And some of the decisions from characters in this film or the things that happen just...don’t make sense. And from an outside point of view, this film did nothing. Mulan is a bland hero and, while it tries to empower women and female rights, I don’t think it does a very good job. I’m not a women, but I’ll try m best to convey my thoughts without offending anyone. The Mulan in this film is only powerful because she has CHI. That’s not empowerment, that’s plot. In the original Mulan, she was powerful because she was smart and efficient. She didn’t need CHI to be a good character, she had a good personality to back it up. And in terms of representing Asians, this didn’t do anything for me (and I’m Asian so...). Ultimately, this film is a bland, unoriginal, uninspired, disappointing film. I’m sorry @jfwong that they didn’t give you more screen time.
