Have you ever taken the time to reflect on the number of things we do mechanically in a day without thinking?
Brush our teeth, take a shower, get dressed, eat, poop, and breathe, all taken for granted and all done with a lack of awareness and mindfulness.
Our average inhalation and exhalation are about 12 breathes per minute but how many of those are done appropriately?
Not breathing properly can affect a bunch of functions in our body such as our sleep, our mood, our nervous system, our heart, our lungs, our brain, and also our teeth! Yep, that bad.
What can we do to improve this vital mechanism?
Since our breathing is a reflection of our thoughts, feelings, and stressful patterns, we should learn to listen to our bodies and attempt to be aware of what it is telling us. Pause, and try relax breathing.
Take a moment during the day to slow down and take 10 breaths. Inhale through your nose to the count of 4, filling your belly with air and upper lungs, hold for 4, and exhale through your nose to the count of 8, while relaxing your body and allowing those shoulders to drop. Each time you feel overwhelmed, stressed, anxious, or fearful, pause, and take a breath.
This simple and mindful process will help you calm down, ground yourself, and allow you to be aware of some of your dodgy breathing patterns. You will feel instant relief in your mood, your stress levels, and the benefit of feeling more connected to yourself, which will help you cope better with your day to day life. Every day, take a little time for yourself, it doesn’t take long and brings you peace, relaxation, and more awareness.
Be kind to yourself and breathe.
